You’re walking along Laguna Beach’s beautiful shoreline enjoying your favorite gelato when you notice the sun casting a spectacle over the ocean. Off to the distance, you spot a shadow and as you squint in an attempt at catching a better glimpse, a local whispers to you “It’s Catalina Island."
Yes, Southern California does have a local island, Santa Catalina Island. Catalina Island, an hour boat ride off the coast of Southern California has been inhabited for at least 8000 years. Although it is only about 1 square mile, it holds a lot of treasures. The main populated city, Avalon, is a year long tourist destination. Whether you are there for a day or a couple of days, there are enough things to do to keep your family entertained for days.
Catalina Island is known for its land, water and air activities. For some it's scuba diving, snorkeling, or kayaking. For others its hiking, biking, zip lining, playing golf or exploring charming shops. Whatever you prefer, there is something for everyone.
Touring the island is a must. A popular way to see it, and a favorite of the kids, is by renting a golf cart. Bike rentals are also popular and a great way to spend the day sightseeing. If you are staying overnight, star gazing is not to be missed. As you stare into the darkness, you will be mesmerized by the vivid stars and constellations that shower the clear skies in a beautiful show of lights.
A few quick tips before going to Catalina
Purchase your boat tickets prior to your trip because they sell out
Make sure you dress in layers as it gets very cold on the ride there
Once you get there, everything is in walking distance
