Ein Prosit!

If you’re in the mood for some serious fun in October, then look no further than Munich, Bavaria, Germany where the world’s largest festival is held annually over a 16 day period from late September to early October. More than 6 million people from around the world flock to the area to celebrate and consume traditional German foods such as Hendl(roast chicken), Schweinebraten(roast pork), and Wurstl(sausages). And to help wash things down, Oktoberfest Beer does a perfect job.

The annual celebration of Bavarian culture was born as a result of Crown prince Ludwig, later becoming King Ludwig I, marrying Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghause on October 12, 1810. On this joyous occasion, the citizens of Munich were invited to celebrate with the royal couple. Horse races marked the close of the royal celebration. The decision to repeat the horse races in the following years gave birth to the annual tradition of Oktoberfest.

Over the years, the celebration dates and itineraries have shifted a little, but the intensity has not dwindled. There are marches in traditional Bavarian costumes, game booths, musicians, beer booths, dance halls, more beer booths and much more.

In 2013, 6.4 million people visited Oktoberfest and consumed 6.7 million liters of beer.

The celebration is not just for those visiting Bavaria, Germany however. Around the world, German villages and settlements celebrate Oktoberfest much the same way as Munich, Bavaria. Old World in Huntington Beach, Orange County, is the local’s version of Bavaria, Germany, celebrating Oktoberfest with food, music, games and of course beer, lots of beer.
